Fabric Facts

Silver Fleece always holds all of their yarns in stock, to ensure we can knit your garment when you want it. This includes over 70 colours in Poly Cotton and over 50 colours in Wool Nylon. All Silver Fleece yarn is two folded, which means that 2 single fibres are twisted together opposing each other so that all of our knitting has reduced twisting and as a result, your garment seams will always be at your side.

Poly Cotton is a fabulous yarn that is made up from a strong core of polyester with the cotton wound around that core. This gives the comfort of having the cotton next to your skin, with the strength of the polyester for durability and colour retention, which makes it a great yarn for people with skin irritations. Poly Cotton is easy to care for and can be machine washed and tumble dried and if handled correctly, poly cotton only needs minimal ironing. It is possible that darker colours will fade, and fluffing and pilling could occur, but with correct washing the colour will keep for a long time and you can keep the pilling under control. Silver Fleece knits poly cotton into a range of different fabrics and weights, from a single jersey or polo shirt, to a heavyweight rugby knit and interlock.

100% Combed Cotton is a soft and comfortable, natural fibre and is ideal for people with skin irritations. 100% Cotton will fluff a little, and darker colours can be prone to fading, but with good laundry care, this can be limited and prevent pilling. 100% Cotton can be knitted into a range of different fabrics and weights, from a light weight single jersey to a heavy weight rugby knit and interlock.

100% Polyester is the perfect yarn for a non fade product. It is ideal for use on High Visibility products and trims and collars that are exposed to a lot of sunlight. Polyester is easy to care for with minimal need for ironing. Many new fabrics have a moisture management and antibacterial process. The antibacterial does wash out over time however.

100% Pure New Australian Wool is a wonderful natural fibre which can be cool in Summer and warm in Winter. 80% Pure New Australian Wool / 20% Nylon is a strong fibre which is perfect for school and corporate use. This yarn also has the additional strength of nylon to keep it in shape and aid durability for heavy use garments. 100% Pure New Australian Wool & 80% Pure New Australian Wool / 20% Nylon Blend are both Superwash, so they can be machine washed and tumble dried. Silver Fleece can knit these yarns into a range of different weights of fabrics to suit many styles of garments, from light weight pullovers to a full knit jumper, vest or cardigan and fancy, novelty knits. Wool is also ideal for use in Fire Fighting or in flame retardant items as it will not burst into flames like man made fibres. Wool is a short fibre, so it does have a tendancy to fluff. If we twist the yarn too tight, the yarn wont let the ends out of the fibre to fluff, but will feel stiff and hard, and if it’s twisted loosely then the ends come out excessively. It is an important job to get the twisting just right. Silver Fleece uses 2 twisting procedures so that the first twist of the thread is tight, to hold in the short ends, and the second twist, joining the two single threads together is a softer twist to give an ultra soft feel to the garment you wear, while reducing the amount of fluff. It is important to always wash your garment inside out. This will gently remove the ends of the short yarn and reduce the pilling effect. Pills are made from the fluff being rubbed together in areas of wear. They can be removed by hand using a fabric comb or a battery operated fluff remover.
